We’ve asked some of our Asian Studies faculty, staff and students to share their experiences on working from home. Communications Assistant Anthony Pun has found solace by being lost in the countless pages of books.
What are some problems you may have encountered during the transition to remote working?
- Definitely missing the atmosphere of the workplace and the campus itself. There are perks to working and attending class at home, but it just isn’t the same.
How did you cope with the problems to ease the transition?
- With the less frequent communication you’d get from the office or classroom, I think being more patient with everything, overall, has helped with the transition.
Describe one new thing (skill, interest, pastime, etc) you may have learned during the quarantine time
- I’ve learned that the extra time has allowed me to let my mind explore more creative and fantastical ideas. This was supplemented with my recent binge on author, Brandon Sanderson, and his lectures on creative writing.
Any medium (music, books, cooking recipe, etc.) you could recommend that you’ve found relaxing/entertaining recently?
- Lately, I’ve been on a nostalgia trip, picking up old games or finishing and rereading books that have been collecting dust on my shelf, I found that this has been really helpful and somewhat cathartic. If you want to take a break from games and something slower paced, you can always pick up a book. There’s something nice and tranquil about being able to relax and flip through a book with everything that’s going on outside.
During this time, have you sought/found any words of wisdom or quotes from your language area/culture/background that you have found to be particularly comforting, and could share if so?
- I guess it’d be to try to find a silver lining amidst the current concern. Make the most out of this extra time and maybe you’ll come out of this with a few more skills!
As a thank you for your time in answering these questions, is there anything personally you’d like to promote or let everyone know about right now?
- Thanks to all the staff and those involved by keeping everything running smoothly and easing everyone to this transition!
