UBC Cantonese Language Program celebrates Lunar New Year 2025

UBC Botanical Garden hosted a vibrant Lunar New Year Market on January 25 and 26, serving as a pre-celebration for the Year of the Snake. The market offered an exciting blend of cultural experiences, with a variety of booths, activities, and performances that highlighted the rich traditions of the Lunar New Year. One of the key highlights was the Cantonese Language Program’s booth, where visitors had the opportunity to purchase Cantonese books and merchandise and learn more about the program offerings. This booth not only served as a resource for language learners but also acted as a cultural bridge, fostering interest and appreciation for Cantonese language and heritage.

In addition to the booth, the Cantonese Language Program hosted two engaging workshops during the event. On January 25, attendees had the chance to participate in a Mahjong activity, which introduced the game’s cultural significance and allowed people to try their hand at this traditional pastime. On January 26, the Cantonese storytelling workshop, led by students from the CNTO 451 Advanced Cantonese through Popular Culture course, captivated participants with tales and folklore, offering a unique insight into Cantonese storytelling traditions. The students’ involvement added a personal touch to the event, as they shared their knowledge and passion for Cantonese culture with the audience. This combination of cultural promotion, hands-on activities, and student-led workshops made the Lunar New Year Market an enriching experience for all those in attendance, celebrating both the traditions of the past and the dynamic future of the Cantonese language.

Following the lively Lunar New Year Market at the UBC Botanical Garden, the Cantonese Language Program brought the festive spirit back to campus, continuing to engage the broader UBC community. On January 29, 2025, a mahjong activity was held as part of the Lunar New Year celebration organized by the UBC Alma Mater Society in the Lower Atrium of the Nest. Mahjong, a game deeply rooted in Chinese culture, embodies strategy, camaraderie, and tradition. For many, the Lunar New Year is a time to gather with loved ones, sharing the warmth of togetherness—values that mahjong naturally fosters. Throughout the day, students and community members came together around mahjong tables, clicking tiles and exchanging friendly banter with friendly volunteers who taught beginners how to play. Regardless of their level of familiarity with the game, participants experienced firsthand how mahjong brings people together and creates a welcoming atmosphere. The event provided not only an opportunity to engage with Cantonese language and culture but also a reminder of the importance of connection and joy in the new year.

We sincerely thank all the volunteers, students, and participants who dedicated their time and enthusiasm to making these celebrations successful. Their commitment and support fostered a warm and inclusive atmosphere where we could share and celebrate the Cantonese language and culture. We wish everyone a prosperous and joyful Year of the Snake!
